Dear Mom

Another Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I’m dreading it.  Being a stepmom is difficult but not being acknowledged for being a stepmom is even worse.

I’m blessed in that my husband, stepsons and mother-in-law acknowledge me on Mother’s Day with cards and such.  In return I will acknowledge you, my mother-in-law and my sister.  But the sad thing is that, just as on past Mother’s Days, you will neglect to acknowledge me.

It hurts me so much.  I long to hear you wish me a “Happy Mother’s Day.”  But after all this time I realize that may never happen.  So again this year I will put a smile on my face and spend the day doing something nice for you, but inside I’ll be screaming, “Wish me a Happy Mother’s Day! Stepmoms matter too!”

Honestly, I’m your child – you know my parenting struggles intimately, why I’m I less of a parent in your eyes because I’m a stepmom?

Love, Your Daughter (the stepmom)

  1. Your letter broke my heart, because it wasn’t that long ago that I was “only” a Stepmom. I know that I am just a stranger, but I want to tell you that I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day! You do matter, you do count, and the world is a better place because of Stepmoms. Because of you.

  2. I told my mom the other day that I hate Mother’s Day. It’s tough being a stepmom. It always feels like we do all the work and get non of the credit…

  3. I tried to explain this feeling to my husband recently. I’ve been helping to take care of his 2-year-old daughter for over a year now. He has joint custody with his ex-wife. When his daughter is with us, I do just as much work as her mother but I get none of the respect and recognition. I try my best to show love to his daughter but I’m constantly reminded (not by my husband) that I’m not her mother.
