Dear Stepson

I love you.
I love you when we lay on our bellies on the floor together and watch “Diego”.
I love you when you act silly and make me and your Daddy laugh.
I love you when you eat all your vegetables. Even if it’s only after I make a mashed potato volcano, gravy lava, and broccolli trees.
I love you when we fall asleep on the couch together.
I love you when you run in the house after Daddy picks you up from Mommy’s house and you run into my arms.
I love you when you and your Daddy are playing and giggling.
I love you when you are being a good helper and help make juice and do the dishes and wipe up messes with us.
I love watching you grow up to be a beautiful little boy.

But those are the easy parts.

I also love you when you refuse to listen to me.
I love you when you tell me that you don’t miss me, and that you learned that at Mommy’s house.
I love you when you are so frustrated that you cry.
I love you when you say that you can only love one parent.
I love you when you are acting out and throw tantrums.

Those are the difficult times, but they are the most important, too. Because those times are when you need me to love you the most.

My promise to you is that I will love you forever.
I will always put your best interests before mine.
I will always do my best to make you feel comfortable with our growing family.
I will always do whatever I can to help you succeed in everything that you undertake.
I will always look through the tantrums, and address the underlying issues.
I will always smile through my tears when you say hurtful things, because I know that they are not your words.
I will always stand up for your rights.
I will always love you unconditionally, without ever demanding love back.

Children are a blessing to all in their lives. Absolutely regardless of who their parents are. The miracle of birth is nothing short of that… You are a miracle, and deserve to be treated as such by everyone lucky enough to be in your life.

You will always be my ‘little lovey’,
All my love,
Stepmom

P.S. No matter how much I love you, the volcano/lava/broccolli trick will end eventually, so we’re going to need to come up with some veggies you actually like before you turn 4, deal?
